Options for Code of Conduct IFOAM traders

The Code of Conduct for organic traders can draw from a number of fundamental standards and principles. These can help to situate the Code of Conduct within already existing and widely accepted moral frameworks.

Suggestion regarding the underlying basis for the Code of Conduct

The code is based on the two social justice standards listed in the Basic Standards for Organic Production and Processing

10.1 The certification programme shall ensure that operators have a policy on social justice

10.2 The certification programme shall not certify production that is based on violations of basic human rights (in case of clear social injustice)

The code will be a guideline to demonstrate adherence to the standards. The code will be based on ILO conventions, the UN Charter of Rights for Children and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and strengthen international social rights enforcement mechanisms.

With the development of social standards within the IFOAM Basic (Environmental) Standards, IFOAM has brought social justice concerns into the core of organic principles and activities. In this way financial, social and environmental value is incorporated into normal business practice (triple bottom-line). The separate development of a social code of conduct for traders can facilitate the development of social expertise within IFOAM and address social issues within the supply chain at a level where significant benefits can be achieved. The code of conduct is considered as a step by organic traders in the process towards a comprehensive social agenda for organic agriculture.
